A successful day of discovery: Business Alignment in Challenging Times

Our first Discovery Day of 2023, and our first in person event for a while, saw Mike Bainbridge, Customer Innovation Leader EMEA at Amazon Web Services (AWS) deliver an inspiring talk on 'Building a culture of innovation.'

Innovation was a big focus of our event with attendees keen to learn from Amazon's 25-year history of successful product launches and discover how to foster a culture of innovation within their own organization and actionable steps to achieve success.

Mike shared some examples of how to fall in love with your problems, embrace failure, and some pitfalls to avoid.

  • Organizational blockers in traditional businesses - what if everyone in the company had the power to innovate and explore?
  • Experiments are safe to fail - the aim should be to fail fast.
  • Amazon's success story with innovation and how they got their innovative reputation.
  • How to replicate Amazon's innovation success.

With over two decades of IT strategy experience, Mike is focused on deeply understanding customers and using technology to deliver high-impact solutions.

Innovation takeaway

Innovation and experimentation are not only vital to modernization and transformation, but they will help you remain up-to-date and competitive in challenging times.

While you cannot always control external challenges (economy, energy costs, supply chain, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) considerations), you can control how you respond to them.

Remaining lean, efficient, and well aligned internally will give you the best chance to perform optimally. Visualizing how all of these complex factors are interconnected can help to drive better decision making to achieve success.

What's next?

Keep an eye out for our next Discovery Day event where the focus will be on the Manufacturing industry and the challenges faced around reducing cost and remaining competitive in today's world of rising costs, labour woes and inflationary pressure.

In the meantime check out our blog post; The importance of a Business Innovation Management Strategy.
